He's only lived in Olympia for three years, but already, Dr. Brian Koning is giving back to the community in a big way.

Following an invitation to the Mission's dental clinic benefit concert two years ago, the idea to begin a similar program for vision was born. Dr. Koning wasted no time in following through and immediately began contacting other vision professionals, as well as community clubs and optical companies.

By the time the Mission's new space was ready to move into, he had all of the pieces for a no-fee vision clinic in place, including a company that will prepare lenses at a reduced rate, and a commitment from the Olympia Host Lion's Club to pay for the lenses.

The Vision Clinic will serve low income, uninsured individuals, and is scheduled to operate on Monday evenings from 5 to 8 pm. Dr Koning will provide care on a rotating basis with six of his colleagues, and hopes that more will commit in the future.

"The need is out there, and once doctors see what needs to be done, they will appreciate the clinic and want to serve here," he said, addingt that he loves the fact its all being done in the name of Christ.

The clinic began operations April 7th with Volunteer Violet Hofman acting as receptionist. Doctors will see between five and eight patients each week.
